21 January — European Mediation Day
On 21 January, Europe marks European Mediation Day, highlighting the important role of mediation in ensuring access to justice and promoting the peaceful resolution of disputes.
Mediation is an effective mechanism that creates opportunities for fair and constructive conflict resolution, particularly in situations where access to court proceedings may be limited by a lack of resources, geographical distance, or time constraints. It encourages dialogue between the parties and helps them find solutions that take into account the interests of everyone involved.
An important contribution to the development of mediation in Europe is made by the European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice (CEPEJ) and the Council of Europe. Their systematic work includes developing recommendations, standards, and practical tools, as well as promoting and sharing good practices among Council of Europe member states.
These efforts are gradually transforming approaches to dispute resolution across Europe, contributing to justice systems that are more accessible and people-centred.
As a member state of the Council of Europe, Ukraine has the opportunity to actively exchange experience with European partners and implement effective European practices and standards in the field of mediation.
European Mediation Day is another opportunity to emphasise that dialogue, mutual understanding, and the ability to seek mutually acceptable solutions are essential elements of a modern and accessible justice system.
