Barrie J. Roberts is a lawyer, mediator, and English language instructor. Barrie earned an LL.M. (Master of Law) in Dispute Resolution and a Master’s Degree in Teaching English as a Second Language, a background which allowed her to create “English for Dispute Resolution” courses and materials for international students at the University of California, Berkeley, and the Chapman University School of Law. Barrie has provided numerous “English for Dispute Resolution” trainings for English language instructors and court interpreters at international conferences and online. She is the author of The Getting to Yes© Guide for ESL Students and Professionals, a page-by-page guide, for non-native English speakers, to the classic Harvard Project on Negotiation book on “win-win” negotiation. Her next book, English for Dispute Resolution: Mastering Negotiation, Mediation and Alternative Dispute Resolution, will be published in July 2025 (University of Michigan Press). Recognizing the challenges faced by non-native English speakers in mediation sessions with fluent English speakers, she is dedicated to making mediation more accessible and effective across cultural and linguistic barriers.
