30 Years of Values That Shape Ukraine’s Future

On June 28, 1996, Ukraine adopted its Constitution—a document that established the foundations of the state and enshrined the values at the heart of a democratic society. Human dignity, freedom, equality, justice, and respect for human rights remain the cornerstones of Ukraine’s development and the foundation for building a democratic society governed by the rule of law.

These principles are equally important for the development of mediation. Mediation is built on respect for every individual, the right of each person to be heard, responsibility for one’s own decisions, and a commitment to constructive dialogue. These values help people reach mutually acceptable solutions and strengthen a culture of peaceful dispute resolution.

Importantly, Article 124 of the Constitution of Ukraine provides for the possibility of resolving disputes out of court. Mediation is one of the mechanisms that enables parties to find mutually acceptable solutions through dialogue and understanding, without resorting to litigation.

On Constitution Day of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Academy of Mediation wishes that respect for human rights, a culture of dialogue, responsibility, and mutual understanding continue to serve as a strong foundation for the development of Ukrainian society and the future of our country.
