Emotional Intelligence in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: What Should Remain Human?

Emotional Intelligence in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: What Should Remain Human?

On 30 September 2026 at 20:00 Kyiv time, the Ukrainian Academy of Mediation invites you to an online event, “Emotional Intelligence in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: What Should Remain Human?”

Artificial intelligence is becoming an increasingly significant part of our everyday lives and communication. It can already help us analyse emotions, suggest ways to respond, provide support in difficult situations, and even create a sense of being heard and understood.

But what happens to our own emotional intelligence when we begin to delegate part of this inner work to AI? And in this new interaction, what is important to keep distinctly human?

This topic is particularly relevant to mediation. The work of a mediator is inseparable from emotions, empathy, the ability to hear and understand another person, to notice what lies behind their words, and to maintain meaningful human connection even in challenging situations.

Today, as artificial intelligence can already analyse emotional signals, help us find the right words, and simulate empathic communication, an important question arises: what can we delegate to technology, and what should remain a human capacity of the mediator?

During the event, we will explore how artificial intelligence can support self-reflection, emotional regulation, empathy, and communication; where the line between support and substitution lies; and which human capacities are particularly important for us to continue developing ourselves.

A separate part of the event will be dedicated to presenting the results of a research survey among Ukrainians on the use of artificial intelligence, emotional support, empathy, and the human qualities that respondents believe should not be delegated to AI.

This will not be a conversation about whether artificial intelligence is good or bad, but rather about a different question:

How can we use the possibilities of artificial intelligence in a way that helps us become more self-aware, emotionally competent, and human, rather than allowing it to replace these capacities?

Facilitator — Hanna Baryshnykova, psychologist, mediator, trainer at the Ukrainian Academy of Mediation, and author of emotional intelligence development programmes.
