International Children’s Book Day: Stories That Help Children Talk About Conflict and Understanding

On 2 April, the world celebrates International Children’s Book Day—an occasion that highlights the important role of reading in children’s development, the formation of values, and the development of communication skills.

Books help children not only explore the world around them but also understand their own emotions, build healthy relationships, and discover constructive ways to resolve disagreements. Stories remain one of the most effective ways to engage children in conversations about complex topics without lecturing or moralising.

Among the educational resources developed by the Ukrainian Academy of Mediation is a series of stories featuring the dragons Rota and Dema. Through the adventures of these characters, children encounter situations that are familiar to them—misunderstandings, arguments, hurt feelings, reconciliation, and finding common ground.

Together with the characters, children learn how to express their emotions, listen to others, find solutions to conflicts, and engage in meaningful dialogue. The stories are available both in print and in audio format, with free recordings accessible on YouTube.

These materials can be valuable for teachers during classroom activities as well as for parents looking for meaningful ways to start important conversations at home. Sometimes, a story is the simplest way to help a child better understand themselves and others.
