International Day of Families: Support, Dialogue, and the Best Interests of the Child

International Day of Families: Support, Dialogue, and the Best Interests of the Child

very year on May 15, people around the world celebrate the International Day of Families — a day that reminds us of the importance of family bonds, mutual support, and responsibility for one another.

For each person, the feeling of home may be different: the smell of dinner in the kitchen, a familiar voice from the next room, family traditions, or cherished objects that preserve warm memories. It is these moments that create a sense of safety, belonging, and connection that family provides.

At the same time, family life is not always free from challenges. Fatigue, misunderstandings, difficult decisions, and complicated conversations are part of many families’ experiences. In such moments, respect, the willingness to listen, and the ability to seek solutions through dialogue become especially important.

This approach is particularly crucial in situations where conflict between adults may affect children. Professionals working in the fields of mediation and child rights protection emphasize that a child should never become a participant in conflicts between adults, be forced to choose sides, or bear responsibility for decisions made by others. Even in difficult circumstances, children should have access to an environment of love, support, and emotional security.

This is why protecting the best interests of the child and promoting the constructive resolution of family disputes remain among the key priorities in the development of family mediation.

This year, the X International Forum “Mediation and Law” will dedicate special attention to mediation in disputes involving children, international standards, and practices that help families navigate challenging situations with greater care and sensitivity to children's needs.

On the International Day of Families, we are reminded that care, respect, and dialogue remain essential foundations of strong family relationships, even when circumstances become difficult.
