Mediation for Service Members, Veterans and Their Families

Mediation for Service Members, Veterans and Their Families

War affects not only those who defend the country, but also their loved ones. Long periods of separation, uncertainty, changes in everyday life, and returning home can bring difficult issues that families may find hard to discuss on their own.

The Ukrainian Academy of Mediation offers service members, veterans and their family members the opportunity to access mediation services free of charge.

When Mediation Can Help

Mediation can be helpful when misunderstandings or conflicts arise between loved ones, when it is difficult to calmly discuss an important issue, or when finding a solution that takes everyone’s needs into account seems challenging.

During mediation, a neutral and independent mediator helps participants have a constructive conversation, better hear and understand one another, identify the issues that matter to each person, and work towards mutually acceptable solutions.

A mediator does not decide who is right, make decisions for the participants, or impose their own view of the situation. The decisions remain with the parties themselves.

Mediation is confidential and voluntary.

What Issues Can Be Addressed

Mediation can help with family and everyday disagreements, issues between spouses or other family members, arrangements concerning children, communication after a long period of separation, and other situations where people want to restore dialogue and try to reach an agreement.

There is no need to wait until a misunderstanding develops into a serious conflict. You can turn to a mediator whenever there is an issue that is difficult to discuss on your own.

How to Access Mediation

The service is available free of charge to service members, veterans and their family members.

Request Mediation

For the Ukrainian Academy of Mediation, this is one of the ways we can support those who defend Ukraine, those who have returned from service, and their loved ones — by doing what we know and do professionally: creating space for dialogue and helping people find mutual understanding.
