Ukraine Launches Its First Interpreting Programme in the Field of Mediation

For the first time in Ukraine, a specialised programme on interpreting in the field of mediation has been launched for interpreters — “Foundations in Mediation for Ukrainian Interpreters”. The initiative aims to prepare professionals who not only have strong language skills but also understand the logic, principles, and specific features of the mediation process.

Mediation requires a high level of accuracy, clarity, and sensitivity to both the meaning and emotional nuances of communication. An inaccurately interpreted word or a lost emotional nuance can significantly affect the course of negotiations. For this reason, the programme combines the development of interpreting skills with an in-depth introduction to the principles and structure of mediation.

Participants will work with specialised mediation terminology, develop active listening skills, and take part in mediation simulations. This practical approach will help interpreters support the dynamics of the mediation process while maintaining neutrality and accuracy.

The key objective of the programme is to build a professional community of interpreters who understand mediation processes in depth and are able to provide high-quality communication support during mediation.

The programme is delivered by American experts Barrie J. Roberts and Maria Ceballos-Wallis, who have extensive practical experience at the intersection of mediation and interpreting.

The training is organised by the Ukrainian Academy of Mediation in cooperation with the Ukrainian Association of Translators and Interpreters within the project “CONSENT: Enhancing the Role of Alternative Dispute Resolution in Ukraine with a Focus on Mediation”, implemented with the financial support of the European Union.
