Youth Day: The Future Belongs to the Culture of Dialogue
On August 12, Ukraine celebrated Youth Day — a reminder that young people are the source of energy for change, new ideas, and the development of a culture of understanding. University mediation services, already operating in different parts of the country, show that the younger generation consciously chooses dialogue and partnership instead of confrontation.
Every year, more universities in Ukraine establish mediation services. This demonstrates that both students and professors are embracing the culture of dialogue as a way to resolve disputes, find common ground, and build a healthy academic environment. These changes are made possible by the proactive engagement of young people.
Mediation for youth means:
- a tool for peaceful conflict resolution;
- an opportunity to be heard and freely express one’s position;
- a space to seek solutions that take everyone’s interests into account;
- a skill useful in studies, careers, and everyday life.
We are proud of those who created and continue to develop mediation initiatives at their universities, and we believe there will be even more success stories where partnership replaces confrontation.
As part of the project “Building a Culture of Consensual Conflict Resolution as a Way to Achieve Justice in Ukrainian Society,” implemented by the Ukrainian Academy of Mediation with the support of the American people through USAID’s Justice for All Program, mediation services were launched at:
- National University “Odesa Maritime Academy”;
- Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University;
- State University of Trade and Economics;
- National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.
These university-based mediation services were created to:
- strengthen mutual understanding in student groups and dormitories;
- provide mediation services to students, teachers, and administrators;
- organize activities to promote the culture of peaceful conflict resolution;
- build cooperation with professional mediators and educational institutions;
- develop students’ skills in applying mediation in education, careers, and life.
