PROJECT "INCREASING THE AWARENESS OF JUDGES AND LAWYERS REGARDING MEDIATION AND CITIZENS' AWARENESS OF MEDIATION TO IMPROVE ACCESS TO JUSTICE AND INCREASE THE EFFICIENCY OF THE JUDICIAL AUTHORITY"

In 2018, the Ukrainian Academy of Mediation implemented the project "Increasing the awareness of judges and lawyers regarding mediation and citizens' awareness of mediation to improve access to justice and increase the effectiveness of the judiciary."
This project was implemented with the support of the American people, provided through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) within the framework of the New Justice Program.

As part of the project, the following educational activities were carried out:

    information seminars for lawyers "Mediation as a tool for a lawyer" - a total of 21 seminars in 21 regions of Ukraine. More than 3,000 lawyers attended the seminars;
    informative seminars for judges "Court and mediation: possibilities and prospects". A total of 23 seminars in 23 regions of Ukraine. About 700 judges attended the seminars;
    seminars for judges of pilot courts "Court and mediation: how should judges properly offer mediation to trial participants, at which stage of the trial and in what manner." About 50 people attended the seminars.

The following materials were developed, printed and distributed among citizens, judges and lawyers:

    information booklet "Mediation. Information for lawyers";
    information booklet "Mediation. Information for judges";
    information booklet "Mediation. Information for citizens";
    "A Judge's Roadmap for Suggesting Mediation to the Parties."

Printed and distributed materials within this Project:

    article "Mediation in Ukraine: nuances of legislative regulation";
    article "Mediation in the professional activity of a lawyer";
    infographic "Mediation and dispute settlement procedure with the participation of a judge."

Informational materials on mediation were developed, produced and placed in the premises of pilot courts - posters, billboards and banners.

You can familiarize yourself with the materials developed as part of the project at the following link:

Two mediation offices were opened in the courts, where citizens had the opportunity to obtain free information about the mediation procedure, undergo mediation counseling regarding the existing dispute and participate in the mediation procedure:
● in the building of the Odesa Commercial Court of Appeal and the Commercial Court of Odesa Region;
● in the Kyiv District Court of Odesa.

As part of the project, about 400 people visited the mediation offices and 19 mediations were held.
After the completion of the project, the Ukrainian Academy of Mediation, together with its partners - pilot courts, continue to support the work of mediation offices on a volunteer basis in order to provide citizens with access to mediation.

A sociological study "Dynamics of citizens' attitudes towards mediation: awareness and readiness to use" was conducted, within which a questionnaire was conducted among court visitors and visitors to mediation offices. The results of the survey of the respondents showed an increase in the level of citizens' awareness of the mediation procedure based on the results of the project implementation.

A round table was held on the results of the project "Increasing the awareness of judges and lawyers regarding mediation and citizens' awareness of mediation to improve access to justice and increase the effectiveness of the judiciary." Materials of the round table at the link:
