MEDIATORIUM: Building a Community of Change Together
On April 28, lecturers of the MEDIATORIUM hub gathered to discuss how to make the teaching of mediation more modern, effective, and student-centered. The meeting became a space for open dialogue, where experiences, challenges, and aspirations came together in a shared vision for the future of mediation education in Ukraine.
What is MEDIATORIUM?
It is a unique hub for knowledge exchange, professional skills development, and methodological support for university lecturers who work in the field of mediation and alternative dispute resolution (ADR). Its mission is to support the creation of high-quality, up-to-date education, and to foster a culture of dialogue and understanding among young people.
Who is it for?
The hub is designed for university lecturers teaching courses on mediation and ADR. Here, they will receive methodological support, opportunities for joint practice and experience sharing, and will contribute to building a culture of peaceful dispute resolution in the academic environment.
What was discussed at the first meeting?
- Existing resources: lecturers’ enthusiasm, readiness to learn, methodological materials, legal framework, and support from some universities.
- Challenges: lack of qualified staff, shortage of negotiation rooms, need for interactive teaching methods, development of lecturers’ digital skills, and the generally low level of a culture of peaceful conflict resolution.
- Development strategies: guest lectures, establishing mediation services at universities, interactive and gamified formats, supporting lecturers’ self-development, and integrating ADR topics into the curricula of various specialties.
Key takeaway: introducing mediation and ADR courses requires a comprehensive approach, interdisciplinary integration, and the development of a culture of dialogue in academia.
We thank everyone who joined this conversation. Your ideas and openness are shaping a new educational reality where students gain not only knowledge but also essential life skills — resolving conflicts peacefully and building dialogue.
