Webinar with Judge Danny Weinstein: Valuable lessons from mediation
On June 20, 2023, a regular meeting was held within the framework of the Hot Talks on Mediation webinar series organized by Edwards Mediation Academy in cooperation with the Ukrainian Academy of Mediation and the Ukrainian Mediation Center. The event was supported by the European Union's CONSENT Project.
The special guest was retired judge, mediator, philanthropist and mediation legend Danny Weinstein. Judge Weinstein shared his multifaceted experience in resolving complex, high-stakes, multilateral commercial and political disputes. He is the co-founder of JAMS (Judicial Arbitration and Mediation Services) and the founder of the JAMS Weinstein International Fellowship Program and the Weinstein International Foundation.
The webinar was held in the format of an interview conducted by Bruce Edwards, also a co-founder of JAMS. During the conversation, Judge Weinstein spoke about his experience mediating in war-torn Bosnia, where he participated in the transfer of funds worth $15 billion between Muslims, Croats and Serbs, which was an important step in the overall settlement of the conflict.
One of the key moments of the meeting was Judge Weinstein's reflections on the importance of mediation in the modern world. He emphasized the importance of trust and open dialogue in dispute resolution, and stressed the need for flexibility and creativity in finding solutions.
The webinar participants had the opportunity not only to hear fascinating stories and analysis from one of the most influential mediators of our time, but also to ask their questions. Issues related to expanding access to justice, the role of mediation in international conflicts and its importance for society were discussed.
