Introducing the initiative of the Ukrainian Academy of Mediation
“Mediation is”

This initiative was launched to convey the main ideas, features and benefits of mediation through vivid images.
Through visual stories, we aim to draw attention to the importance of mediation, show its impact and benefits, and inspire others to join the process.
Stay tuned for the publication of new illustrations that will tell about the experiences of people who have participated in mediation. These are short but fascinating stories that will show how mediation changes lives.

The role of a mediator is to help parties discover new opportunities through well-crafted questions.

These questions enable participants to not only gain a better understanding of the situation but also generate ideas for resolving it.

Mediation is about finding solutions, not assigning blame.

Conflicts often bring frustration, resentment, or anger. But mediation offers a different approach: instead of determining who is right or wrong, participants work together to find a mutually acceptable solution.

It is not just a way to resolve issues but also an opportunity to build constructive dialogue.

Mediation is a space where everyone is heard

In a conflict, everyone believes they are right. But does that mean the other side must be wrong?

Everyone has their own perspective on the situation, and that’s perfectly normal.

Mediation helps people understand one another. It’s not about arguing who is right but about listening to what truly matters to each side. In a calm environment, you can share your view of the problem, hear the other side, and together find the best solution.

Mediation is confidential communication.
What does this mean for the parties involved?

Any information shared during the preparation and conduct of mediation is confidential and cannot be disclosed unless the parties agree otherwise.

According to the law, a mediator cannot be called as a witness in court, as they are not permitted to reveal what was shared by the parties.
This confidentiality is a significant advantage of mediation compared to the public nature of court proceedings and encourages more clients to choose this method of conflict resolution.

Mediation is when Santa and the elves can agree on who will take the day off on Christmas!
The holiday is approaching, emotions are running high, Santa wants to get everything done, and the elves are already dreaming of a break... Does this sound familiar?
It seems like the situation has reached an impasse... But here comes mediation to restore the harmony of the holiday.

Santa and the elves reached an agreement through mediation, so the gifts will definitely arrive on time!

May your holidays be filled with warmth, understanding, and... the spirit of mediation!

Imagine opening a box of Christmas ornaments just before the holidays, only to find tangled lights inside. Instead of getting angry or hastily trying to break the knots apart, we focus, patiently and step by step, on untangling them.

How does this relate to mediation? Mediators help untangle even the most complicated conflicts just as skillfully as we untangle holiday lights.

Every conflict is a knot that can be unraveled.
All it takes is reaching out to a mediator.

Mediation is when bridges of trust are built from walls of misunderstanding.
People in conflict are separated by a wall of misunderstanding, built from insults, prejudices, and fears. Each side feels isolated, and shared solutions seem out of reach.

A mediator can help the parties dismantle this wall brick by brick, establish dialogue, and guide it in a constructive direction.

Mediation creates a foundation for long-term relationships based on trust and mutual respect.

Mediation is a way to resolve generational gap.
Grandparents, parents and children, millennials and zoomers - each generation has unique values and experiences... At the same time, this can be a cause of conflict.
Most of us are familiar with the situation when a family has disagreements on a particular topic because of the difference in generations. Perhaps at such moments you feel tired and confused? This is exactly the moment when you should think about mediation!
A mediator helps to reconcile different visions, clarify interests and needs, which ultimately helps to restore communication. After all, mediation is an investment in the future of our families and society as a whole.

Mediation is an opportunity to ensure the best interests of the child.

Divorce is a painful break in the lives of partners. It is not surprising that they are depressed and often quarrel. In such situations, children often feel confused, guilty about their parents' divorce and need their support more than ever. Mediation can support parents in adapting to the changes, and the mediator will make sure that the child's interests are brought into their communication.

Children should not be hostage to adult conflicts! Parenthood is for life and should not stop in the event of a breakdown in adult relationships.

Mediation is the key to understanding.

Understanding can be locked in a box that cannot be opened because the key to it has long been lost in the storms of conflict. You have tried various means, but all in vain. Does this sound familiar?

It is at this point that you need a master who will help you create the keys that will open the box together. A mediator is the same master in the world of conflict - a professional who has a set of necessary tools and knowledge. But remember that each party must make its own efforts to create the keys to understanding.

Mediation is the search for a common solution for unique individuals.
Every person is unique.
No two disputes are the same, just as no two people have identical fingerprints. Each of us has our own interests, needs, and concerns... So how effective can standardized approaches be in resolving conflicts we may find ourselves in?
Mediation ensures an individualized approach to each conflict and helps find a common solution that is focused on the interests and needs of all parties involved.

Mediation is a flexible process with various meeting formats.
Flexibility is synonymous with mediation.
The variety of meeting formats allows the procedure to be adapted to the specifics of each dispute and the needs of the parties involved.
From joint sessions to individual meetings, with different durations and formats – all of this is available in mediation.

The materials have been prepared with the financial support of the European Union within the framework of the CONSENT Project implemented by the Ukrainian Mediation Academy. Their contents are the sole responsibility of the team of authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of the European Union.
